Abstract

This article examines the performative function of God's word in Joshua 1:1-9, using Old Testament biblical exegesis as the primary method, enriched by narrative analysis and Speech Act Theory as formulated by J. L. Austin and John R. Searle and developed theologically by Kevin J. Vanhoozer and Nicholas Wolterstorff. The study addresses a gap in scholarship on Joshua 1:1-9: prior research has emphasized the theological content of the divine word, narrative structure, leadership mandate, obedience, and God's promised presence, but has not systematically analyzed divine speech as a communicative act. Through exegetical and narrative reading of context, structure, and speech forms, Speech Act Theory serves as a pragmatic framework distinguishing locutionary content, illocutionary force, and perlocutionary aim of God's word. The article argues that divine speech functions primarily through commissive, directive, and declarative acts binding God to His promise, authorizing Joshua as Moses' successor, and shaping courage and obedience in the leadership mandate. Findings show that Speech Act Theory sharpens exegesis by clarifying not only what God says but also what God does through His word. The contribution is methodological and theological, deepening Old Testament narrative reading and elucidating how leadership legitimacy forms through divine communication demanding Joshua's faithful response.
