Frasa berit ‘ām dalam Nyanyian Hamba

Frasa Ibrani berit ‘ām unik karena hanya muncul dua kali di seluruh Perjanjian Lama (Yes. 42:6; 49:8). Akan tetapi, para penerjemah Alkitab bergumul untuk memberikan terjemahan bermakna. Dari varian yang ada, dua terjemahan perlu disoroti secara khusus: TNK “a covenant people” dan TB2 “perantara perjanjian” (42:6). Untuk itu, pertama-tama terjemahan berit ‘ām bertumpu pada semantik dan sintaksis Ibrani. Kemudian, frasa Ibrani itu dimaknai dalam konteks Nyanyian Hamba dan akhirnya dimaknai dalam dua konteks kitab suci. Dalam konteks kitab suci Yahudi, tafsirnya bersifat nonkristologis dengan Israel sebagai fokus. Dalam konteks kitab suci Kristen, tafsir kristologis dengan Yesus Kristus sebagai personalisasi Sang Hamba. Hasilnya menawarkan sebuah terjemahan berit ‘ām dalam bahasa Indonesia yang mengadopsi misi ganda Sang Hamba (nasional, universal) sebagai “perjanjian bagi umat” (Israel), alih-alih-alih perjanjian bagi umat manusia.
